So I've been sick a lot lately. I'm so tired of it.
I know why now & I'm starting to feel much better. I didn't realize really how bad it had gotten.
Several things have happened.
1. Probably about 8 months ago I started having abdominal pain every now & then. Probably every few weeks? I have the ability to completely ignore my medical issues, so it's hard to say. At any rate, it normally just lasted an evening & was gone when I woke up.
2. If you've read before you know that a few months ago I started taking birth control to help with my feminine plumbing issues.
3. Last week starting on Sunday night I started having pain - lasted for three days, reaching a peak on Tuesday. Wednesday I wasn't hurting most of the day & then started again that evening.
4. I did a ton of research about what I was feeling & self diagnosed it was my gall bladder.
At this point Drew made me go to the ER. (making me miss a church youth activity. LAME! lol)
While at the ER the doc tells me he thinks it's my gall bladder (no kidding?). And says he's going to check my blood sugar since I told him I have diabetes - along with lots of other labs.
The other labs show nothing but my blood sugar was 272! That was a bit of a shock. In the last couple years I've lost almost 80 lbs. I really don't pay much attention to my blood sugar anymore. Previously when I've lost that much weight my diabetes just went away. (If you don't know, blood sugar levels should be between 80 & 120)
So then he says he's going to have them do an A1C - this is a test that tells you your average blood sugar over the last 3 months. It comes back as 13.7 - I didn't even know it could be that high. I had one that was 12 once & my doctor was so shocked I thought that was as bad as it gets. I even had trouble finding a chart that would tell me what 13.7 translated to! Most of the charts just go to 10. Anyway 13.7 means in the last 3 months my average blood sugar was 410!!!!
I was in shock. We scheduled an ultrasound of my gallbladder for the morning & he gave me some meds for my blood sugar & sent me on my way.
By the time I got home I was sobbing. What the heck did I lose all this weight for if my diabetes was going to get worse!!!
I weighed almost 250 lbs & my blood sugar was never 410! It just makes me SO mad.
So I start doing more research online (why do I do that for everything? lol), I find out that birth control (well, any hormone therapy) can do that to a diabetic! Not EVERY diabetic apparently but it's a risk. Did my gyno tell me that? NOOOOO! Or I would have been checking it!!! UGH.
So the birth control has made my cycles so easy and wonderful but apparently they are also KILLING ME.
So, THAT is why for the last few months I literally have NO energy. I've been exhausted. I am tired all the time.
So on Wednesday - no more birth control & start the diabetes meds. I feel WORLDS better.
My blood sugar has been 168 one morning & 187 the next morning (I forgot my pill the night before). Not bad. Not perfect but hopefully as the bc pills get out of my system it'll get better. It's certainly better than 410, eh?
I just can't believe what was happening to my body. *shudder*
In better news, I woke up with a cough this morning. I have all the luck, eh?
PS (added hours later) I should mention we decided I had gall stones. I've probably had them for months & would have pain when they moved around. This time I finally passed them. There was nothing there on the ultra sound. But by the time I had the ultrasound the pain was completely over. My understanding is once you get gall stones you WILL get them again someday. We'll see!
